HP's iPaq Mobile Messenger is awireless handheld that combinesmobile phone and GPRS datacapabilities with built-in satellitenavigation, plus a mini keyboard tomake messaging easier. Thiscombination of features makes itwell suited for mobile workers, especially sales staff or serviceengineers who travel frequently. The Mobile Messenger comes in twoversions: the hw6515 features a 1.3megapixel camera, while thehw6510 has no camera and costsslightly less. Both can be purchasedSIM-free from HP, but most firmswill probably acquire the devicethrough a reseller or carrier with amobile service agreement. We found the Mobile Messengerperformed faultlessly as a phone, though many users may prefer touse either a Bluetooth headset or thesupplied earbud headset whenmaking calls, as the iPaq is biggerthan most mobile handsets. Many ofthe device's other functions aresimilar to those of Pocket PC PDAs.HP's iPaq Wireless control panelallows users to turn both theGSM/GPRS and Bluetooth radios onor off with a single tap of the stylus. Both Mobile Messenger models arebased on a 312MHz Intel PXA270processor with 64MB RAM. The 3indisplay is square instead ofrectangular to make way for theqwerty keypad and displays 240x240pixels. Secure Digital (SD) and MiniSD card slots are available on theright edge of the device. The keys onthe Mobile Messenger's keypad arearranged in a curving layout thattakes a little getting used to.However, we soon found we couldenter text or edit Pocket Worddocuments at a reasonable speedusing thumb typing. The device alsohas a five-way mini joystickcontroller.Navigation facilities are provided byan integrated Global PositioningSystem (GPS) receiver and built-incopy of the popular TomTomNavigator software. This provides a3D view of the user's position on amap, and gives spoken directions torequired destinations with a choiceof voices. However, maps are not included;users can download one city mapfrom the TomTom web site for free, but additional city maps cost ?7while the entire Western Europemap set costs ?139.The built-in GPS uses a techniquecalled Assisted GPS to speed thelocation finding process, usingsatellite orbit data downloaded fromthe internet. This data must berefreshed every couple of days, butupdates seem to be free. The Mobile Messenger comes with a1200mAh removable battery thatshould provide at least a full workingday between recharges, according toHP.As well as the Pocket versions ofWord and Excel, the MobileMessenger comes with manyapplications, including PDF andPowerPoint viewers from ClearVue,HP's iPaq Backup, and the iPaq FileStore tool that lets users accessunused space on the device'snon-volatile Flash ROM.The camera on the hw6515 modelcaptures images at up to 1280x1024resolution, and can also record shortvideo clips.Tuesday, August 09, 2005

Sony Ericsson W800i
Sony Ericsson W800i Details
The Sony Ericsson W800i Walkman is the first product on the market to combine mobile phone, digital music player and high quality camera. It looks the part too with easy to find music on the device and increadible sound quality.
As a 2.5G device, the W800 is intended for manual music transfer, instead of over-the-air downloads and this, for the time being may not be to everyone's liking
The Sony Ericsson W800i Walkman is also a 2 megapixel camera, and in line with Sony's other camera phones, nobody does it better. The photo light and snap on flash make it great for taking shots at night too. With plenty of storage for both music, video and images, the battery life has got to be top notch and so it is.
The 30 hours of music playback, 500MB Memory stick and two megapixel camera make it a high ranking contender in the prestige mobile phone catagory
